Research into Different Styles of Illustrative Photography

-          CD cover photography

When you go to buy a CD in the shop you always see the cover of it before anything else, and if it is interesting enough then you pick it up off the shelf and see what songs are on the album and then buy it. Like with everything if it is presented well and appealing and doesn’t put you off buying it then it is a successful look.

It is hard to narrow down to the final image to use as the album cover, it needs to represent the artist in a good way and in the way that they feel is right and truthful to whom they are. The process of narrowing it down takes a while and includes a lot of mock-ups and approvals in order to get the right one.

Before a photographer goes to photograph the artist it is a good idea that they listen to their album before they meet to be able to get a feel and understand what sort of music they play and therefore they will be able to represent them and photograph them in the right way, for example you wouldn’t expect a heavy metal band to have the album cover of a pop album, all bright colours and fun and vice versa.
The posing on the cover is also important as it when you are taking the photograph you must imagine where the text will go and position them around that. It is also a good idea to position them in the way that they perform on stage if they are in a band.
Location is important as it relates the artists’ image and the music they play, as the photographer it is vital to get this right as it can be the difference to a good or bad album cover. It is also an idea to ask the artist if they have an idea on location as after all they most probably wrote the songs so they will have a good idea what the meaning and inspiration of where the lyrics came from and then the album can have a meaning behind it too. Also if they have a music video that goes with the songs on the album then you could use that location.

< This is the cover for Rihanna’s single ‘Only girl in the world’ and in the video she is in a field singing and this is reflected in the cover, and by doing this it makes people remember the video and the song and then they will hopefully buy it.

-          Book Cover Photography
‘Don’t judge a book by its cover’. When you go into a book shop the first thing you look at is the front cover, and if it looks like a dull, boring book then you won’t want to read it. So the front cover is very important.
There are many different genres of books such as; Children’s, Fantasy/Horror, Biography, Autobiography, Romance, Poetry, Science, Humour, Sport, Computing, History, and Music to name a few. The front cover of any book indicates what the book may be about for an example a biography will have a photo of the persons face on it so that you know it is their book without having to read the title. And a Horror book may have a weapon or blood on the cover.
Through photography you can show as much or as little as you want to about the book on the cover, it can be as complex or as simple as you want it to be. With the front cover it can bold and full of bright colours if ties in with the genre of book it is such as that kind of front cover would be perfect for a romance novel or a children’s book or a fantasy, and you expect a brightly coloured front cover on a horror or crime novel would you? Here is an example of the front cover of a Horror Book and Childrens Book...

Final Edit

Evaluation

I think that my final edit has turned out quite well; it is very different from the original cover which is quite plain and boring. I decided to have a photo of the group on the front cover as I think that it is more welcoming and warm and it makes you feel as though you are getting a little glimpse into the groups’ lives as rock stars. I chose to have a photo of the whole group having a laugh and just chilling out as I think that it shows the group as more grounded and relatable, and that people will be able to see them as normal people and not celebrities.

I thought that as this is a greatest hits album it would be good to include photos of them on stage, so I decided to include that on the back and inside cover. I kept to having a group photo on the front cover as they are a group so it wouldn’t be fair and from my research it shows that on their previous albums on the covers where they have a photo of the group, they are ALL on the cover but they are in serious poses so I wanted to have a more laid back cover, and to show that they are all friends and still after all these years they still enjoy making music together. I put a photo of Jon Bon Jovi on the back cover on stage because he is the lead singer and I think that the particular photo that I chose creates a good effect with the light shining down on him shows him as the star of the show and all of your attention should be on him.

I did one edit in black and white and this then makes the text stand out even more which I think looks really effective especially on the back cover as it then highlights Jon Bon Jovi on the stage and in that light it looks like he is reaching for the stars, which only leaves the question of why as in his fans’ eyes he is all ready a big star. On the inside cover I kept it in colour whilst the rest is in the black and white because I thought it looked effective looking up at him and with lights all around him it makes him look powerful. Throughout the process I tried out a lot of different photos and decided on these three as they are so different and show different things, I thought they create a good contrast as it shows them as a normal people just sitting around relaxing and then there are the photos showing Jon Bon Jovi as powerful which I think is very effective, so overall I am very pleased with my final product.
